Student self-assessment is a method that allows students to study and evaluate their own work. I think that student self-assessment is an important part of student learning. When students assess themselves, they check to see that they have completed each requirement of the assignment within the specified guidelines. They can do this by comparing their work to a rubric. Rubrics are a useful tool in helping students self-assess (Jonnson & Svingby, 2007) and internalize the assignment criteria, which helps them personalize the tasks in the assignment (Piscitello, 2001). Further, Andrade (2011) suggested that when students assess themselves using rubrics, they take more ownership of their learning through creativity.
In my opinion, teachers should allow students to help develop assessments. Allowing students to develop assessments is a similar concept to having students use rubrics to self-assess. When students help develop assessments, they know exactly what is expected of them. Also, the development of the assessment itself can help students learn the material. The caution is that the teacher needs to be highly involved in the process by guiding them in the development of the test questions.
